The Scholarship Committee may award up to three (3) $1,000 College Tuition Assistance Scholarships (each named after CAAK members: Tommy Larrison, Joel Scarbrough, and Robert Blanton) for tuition assistance to a daughter, son, granddaughter, or grandson of an active or retired CAAK member in good standing who is entering his or her freshman, sophomore, junior or senior year at an accredited institution of higher learning in Kentucky. The applicant must exhibit academic excellence and must be enrolled full-time working toward a bachelor’s degree or associate’s degree.
The applicant’s parent, grandparent, or guardian must be employed full-time, or if retired, had been employed full-time, as an inspector, code official or code enforcer for one or more municipalities. The applicant’s parent or grandparent must be an active member in good standing of CAAK for three (3) consecutive years with all dues paid up to date. Retired Members must have been a CAAK member in good standing at the time of his/her retirement for at least five (5) years with all dues paid. Retired members do not have to be members of CAAK at the time of application.
The applicant’s field of study does not have to be code related, as the intent of this award is to assist CAAK member’s family with their cost of tuition.
Background on Scholarship awards:
CAAK has awarded the above scholarships since 2001. Over the years, CAAK has increased the award amount and has awarded over 44 tuition assistance scholarships to CAAK family members with a total amount of over $35,000.
“Tommy Larrison College Tuition Assistance Award”: This scholarship was originally named after former CAAK member Tommy Larrison of Paducah. Tommy was a longstanding CAAK member and primary advocate for the idea of providing scholarships to CAAK member’s children.
“Joel Scarbrough College Tuition Assistance Award”: Joel (Paducah) was elected Secretary in 1997, Vice-President in 1999, President of CAAK from 2000 through 2002, named life director in 2005, and pasted in August 2011. In 2012, Joel Scharbrogh was honored by adding his name to this scholarship program.
“Robert Blanton College Tuition Assistance Award”: Robert (Winchester) was a founding member of CAAK, had served in every position of CAAK and a term on the BOCA Board. 1995 was the year Robert gave the famous Kentucky Colonel campaign speech at BOCA’s Annual Banquet in Kansas City, Mo. In 2006 he conducted a PowerPoint presentation on behalf of CAAK at the Kentucky League of Cities meeting to better educate local leaders about code enforcement and its long lasting benefits. In 2012, Robert Blanton was honored by adding his name to this scholarship program.
