JOB TITLE: Code Enforcement Officer

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE JOB:
This position involves the inspection and enforcement of various codes of the City relating to property maintenance, building, zoning and land use, and public nuisances. Work is performed under the supervision of the Building Official and Director of Planning & Development.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Inspect and enforce codes relating to property maintenance, building, zoning and land use, historic preservation, public nuisances, vehicles, and rights-of-way.
- Inspect properties following natural disasters, fires, and accidents causing damage to properties and buildings.
- Prepare notices of violation and ensure distribution to appropriate recipients.
- Issue citations and fines associated with code enforcement cases.
- Prepare and file liens associated with code enforcement cases.
- In coordination with other governmental agencies, take action relating to the condemnation or demolition of unsafe structures.
- Maintain all records and documents associated with code enforcement cases.
- Communicate with property owners, contractors and the general public regarding the requirements and standards of City codes and ordinances.
- Assist in the preparation of meeting minutes and documentation for the Code Enforcement Board.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Perform additional work as assigned.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

- Perform specific duties as defined in “Duties and Responsibilities.”
- Perform inspections of buildings, including but not limited to, climbing stairs, climbing on to roofs, crawling under building crawl space areas, and visually viewing the property and/or building.
- Operate modern office equipment in the preparation of notices, citations and administrative paperwork.
- Operate a vehicle in a safe manner.
- Communicate with the general public in a clear, polite and understandable manner.
- Maintain records of activities.
- Perform job functions in outside weather conditions.
- Work overtime, or at hours other than regular office hours as necessary.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- High school graduate or GED equivalent.
- Possess and maintain a valid Kentucky Driver’s License.
- Basic understanding of construction and inspection field.
- Knowledge of modern office equipment.
- Physically capable of performing essential job functions.
- Successful completion of a nationally recognized certification program for property maintenance code enforcement within 90 days.
- Neat in appearance, good moral character, and not convicted of a felony crime.
- Ability to read and communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to prepare written reports and correspondence, utilizing modern office equipment.
