The Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction, Division of Building Code Enforcement seeks a qualified individual to serve as a Building Codes Plans Reviewer III, serving an integral part of the building construction process. This position is responsible for the inspection of new or remodeled construction to ensure compliance with the building code and reference standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Reviews architectural or engineering drawings and related documents of new or remodeled construction for compliance with the building code, energy conservation code and reference standards.
  • Works with field inspectors to ensure compliance with the building code, energy conservative code and reference standards.
  • Issues certificates of occupancy.
  • Consults with design professionals, contractors, and owners and other officials concerning building plans.
  • Investigates consumer complaints.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Must have certificate for Level III plans and specifications inspector issued by the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction.
  • Proficient communication skills both verbally and written.
  • Possess sufficient technical knowledge of the construction practices and techniques.
  • Proven abilities to manage multiple projects.
  • Conduct effective code research.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail.
  • High level of customer service.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: High school graduate.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Four years of experience in drafting or preparing building construction documents or in the supervision of building construction or hold a current certificate Kentucky Level III Certified Building Inspector and has worked under that certification for two years or two years of experience as a state plan reviewer or state field inspector employed by the Department of Housing, Building, and Construction.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must hold a current certificate for Level III (three) plans and specifications inspector issued by the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction https://dhbc.ky.gov  as defined in 815 KAR 7:070 https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/kar/titles/815/007/070/  and KRS 198B.090 https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/chapter.aspx?id=38087  Must complete twelve (12), department approved, Kentucky Inspector Certified Program Continuing Education unit credits per year http://www.iccsafe.org  Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials. Working ConditionsWork is typically performed in an office setting.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: An associate degree in architecture, engineering, architectural technology, drafting and designing technology, fire science technology, engineering technology, building construction technology, or related field will substitute for the above experience on a year-for-year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.):Must obtain a level I (one) building inspector certification issued by the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction as defined in KRS 198B.090 and 815 KAR 7.070, within two years of employment in this job classification. Must pass one required certification exam within this certification program, within one year. Must complete twelve (12), department approved, Kentucky Inspector Certified Program Continuing Education unit credits per year.

Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.

City of Paducah Deputy Building Inspector – Fire Prevention

Description:  Under general direction, inspects all phases of residential, commercial, and industrial construction within City jurisdiction to sure conformance with applicable codes.  

Illustrative Duties:  

  • Inspects residential and commercial construction to enforce applicable building codes and ensure compliance with approved plans (e.g., foundation, structure, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, fireplaces, chimneys, etc.)
  • Meets with contractors and homeowners to discuss building code violations; makes recommendations for correcting violations; and serves as a liaison between departments and other local agencies.

Oldham County Permit Clerk

Summary:
Performs varied and highly responsible clerical, technical, and administrative work.  Provides support to the Building and Electrical Inspectors.  Assists in the tracking and issuance of building and electrical permits.  Provides customer service and serves as liaison between the public and the Planning and Development Services staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs duties of an administrative nature, including answering and routing incoming telephone calls and greeting walk-in customers. 

Responds to frequent telephone, email, fax or in-person inquiries regarding building permit requirements, status, fees, and inspections.

Provides Administrative support to Building and Electrical Inspectors.

Processes permit applications by accepting applications and checking for accuracy and completeness. 

Issues permits and Certificates of Occupancy.

Enters permit and inspection data into computer system.

Maintains monthly reports.

Calculates and collects fees for applications. 

 Sets up files in an orderly manner and handles filing of all letters, permits and related information in subdivision and parcel files.

Code Enforcement Officer, Shelbyville Ky

Recruiting a full-time Code Enforcement Officer with the ability to deal courteously with the public. Whose responsibilities include, but are not limited to reviewing plans and conducting inspections of new single-family houses, residential additions, and remodels for code compliance under the current building codes. Issuing permits for new residential construction and preparing correspondence to advise property owners of violations. Conducting regular inspections of properties where violations exist, monitoring progress toward compliance, and assessing penalties as required. Investigating complaints of ordinance violations complaints to ensure buildings and properties are in compliance. Preparing reports and correspondence on open cases and attending Code Enforcement Board meetings to share information about cases referred to the board.

Educational and Experience Qualifications: A High School Diploma or General Educational Development certificate (GED) is required. Two (2) years of code enforcement experience and certification as a I and II Family Dwelling Inspector and ICC Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector are preferred, but not required.

Additional Training Requirements: Obtain the appropriate International Code Council (ICC) or state certifications within six (6) months of hire.

Salary: $42,650 – $50,498 based on experience.
